IBIS stands for "Issue-Based Information System." It's a grammar developed by Werner Kunz and Horst Rittel to help develop a shared understanding of wicked problems.

At its core, the grammar consists of four types:

  • Questions (or Issues)
  • Ideas
  • Pros
  • Cons

Jeff Conklin invented a graphical depiction of this grammar (gIBIS) which serves as the core of Dialogue Mapping.
