ResearchGate

From Faster Than 20

ResearchGate is a social network site for scientists. It's like Facebook with an emphasis on sharing research. It currently has 1.3 million users and is growing.

Lots of people have tried building niche social networking sites. Some are doing okay (witness the many sites on Ning), most are doing poorly. Why has a site like ResearchGate been successful in reaching such scale?

  • Identified a very clear, unmet need (better ways of sharing research among scientists)
  • Presumably solid design
  • Luck?
