Pre-Filming Checklist

<chklist> [] Make sure you have enough space on your phone [] Charge your phone. When device hits 20% battery life, recording will automatically stop and need to be restarted [] Set your device to airplane mode [] Close apps running in background </chklist>

Recommended Settings

  • 4K, 24fps (lower resolution, 60 or 120fps if shooting in slow motion), 16x9, highest bit rate (FiLMiC Extreme on iPhone, 100mbps)
    • Higher bit rate consumes more storage, but gives you a better image
    • Image quality goes down in slomo because of sensor size, so want good light
  • Lock white balance (AWB, red)
  • Flat / Log color profile — most dynamic range, least amount of color. Gives you most options in post. See this video for more.
  • Check your Audio Compression, and if using multiple devices make sure they are in sync (uniformly using 44.1 khz or 48000 khz)

Focus and Exposure

Square is focal point, circle is exposure. Can set both differently, lock. Tap to lock — turns red.

Three modes:

  • Mode 1 is reticle — separate focal and exposure points
  • Mode 2 is auto — same focal and exposure points
  • Mode 3 is manual

Zhiyun Smooth 4 controls:

  • Center thumb wheel click to switch modes
  • Right thumb wheel click to lock focal point
  • Left thumb wheel click to lock exposure
  • Up thumb wheel click to lock both

Timelapse

Set intervals, maintain picture profile. In TimeLapse preset, allow extra time for image to load when setting Focus & Exposure.

Other Tips

If you’re on iOS, you can use FiLMiC Remote on a separate iOS device to control your camera remotely. Unfortunately, it’s a very poorly rated app. Epic Guide to FiLMiC Remote v3 - Official Jump Start Tutorial - YouTube
